Known for reimagining the classic 'It' bag season after season, Mulberry founder Roger Saul plans to shake up the restaurant scene with an experiential new pop-up created from reclaimed movie props.

Stage 1 opens at Kilver Court (Saul's collection of shops, tea room and gardens) in Somerset on 16 November, and is designed by Drèsd founders Lynn and Duncan McFarlane, the couple behind SOHO House Group's 'Re-Cre8' clubs.

'Stage 1 came out of an idea to reuse British film set scrap that otherwise would be junked,' says Saul. 'We have set out to create an experience where you come in from behind the scenes, past flats, cameras and paint pots, through the greenroom and onto the set.

'The 'set' will be a 19^th-century railway waiting room (think Le Train Bleu at Gare du Nord, Paris) complete with platform and coach. You then enter a grand ballroom, all of which has been entirely created out of props and pieces from British-made films.'

The menu, devised by Simon Davis of Jacks Bar & Brasserie, in Bristol, will feature wintry dishes such as venison and juniper pie, and pavlova of plums cooked in mulled wine, with much of the food coming from Saul's own organic farm, Sharpham Park.

In January, the restaurant will be dismantled, and items auctioned off in support of The Teenage Cancer Trust.

A meal at The Shrubbery

It was our friend's birthday last night, usually we venture out of town, but this time I was pleasantly surprised that I could enjoy a glass of red and didn't have to drive. We headed to The Shrubbery in Shepton Mallet. New owners took over in December 2011 and have given the bar and restaurant a fresh new look.

The Shrubberry in the past had retained a rather dark Victorian style,but today you are instantly welcomed by a fresh, white-washed interior with classic and contemporary touches. Wonderful to see a clean, spotless bar

In the restaurant the smell of lilies was sublime. It was a light filled room 
and a warm atmosphere, with candles and a large chandelier.

Crisp white tablecloths, a show-case of wine, and soft ambient music.

 I chose the Exmoor blue cheese salad, apple and walnuts, with a sweet Balsamic dressing, 

and I couldn't resist the spicy three bean chilli with turmeric rice, jalapeno peppers and sour cream. 

The Somerset pork and apple sausages served with creamy mash 
and a cider sauce was the most popular at our table. 

Distracted by the desert of home-made 70% dark chocolate ice cream, with dusted cocoa powder & Espresso shot, I had eaten it before I remembered to take a photo!

Open every day of the week, the restaurant serves everything from morning coffees and nibbles through to wholesome lunches and an a la carte restaurant menu in the evenings. The menus use locally sourced produce and are well-priced.

The hotel has 8 rooms, the majority of which are en-suite and can provide conference facilities for business meetings. The Shrubbery also has an extensive garden and terrace maintained to a high level in which to relax.

Musher's Coffee House - opens

On Saturday I managed to have some time away from my computer and took a stroll along my local high street, 
Shepton Mallet.  Musher's Coffee House  has opened so I popped in and had a chat with owner, 
Simon Davies (previous owner of Pickwicks in Wells) 

As a coffee addict I was delighted to taste a 'real' coffee.... a great cappuccino!

and I must admit I was tempted by the home-made cakes.

The style of the coffee house is eclectic, styled with quirky décor, 
creating an environment with a warm, casual ambience and excellent coffee!

Simon's plans are to provide a 'continental' style breakfast of croissants and pastries 

and is also applying for a wine bar license

Award-winning chef opens new café - inspired by BBC Turn Back Time

Owners of the award-winning restaurant and cafe in Wells, Adam and Martine Fellows-Goodfellows

The series 'Turn Back Time', watched by over five million people each week, has prompted Adam and Martine Fellows to open a new cafe within the Haskins department store in Shepton Mallet. 

The cafe opens on Monday 22nd November and will offer all the specialities

of Goodfellows from breakfast and patisserie to

their famous £10 lunch, award winning handmade

pastries and great coffee.

'Shop Watch'

Julie Duncan, Caroline and Mark Palmer opened the doors to Peppers Deli' and Cafe two and a half years ago. They are no strangers to the catering trade having managed an Italian deli and ran a pub in London. Before choosing Shepton Mallet as a location for Peppers they ran an ‘award winning’ pub / restaurant in Bath.

Peppers have become well known for homemade takeaway food, produced on site for the cafe and the deli. They also supply a wonderful array of local produce in their shop.

Peppers have been awarded 'The Accessible Somerset Award' in recognition for their accomplishment regarding disability access.

A success story is emerging for the town, Peppers have been steadily growing year on year. Growth has increased this year having introduced internal and external catering for private and business functions.
