Re-opening of the aviary at Collett Park

A visit to Collett Park last October inspired Neil Watkins to instigate the re-modelling of the aviary in Collett Park, it looked tired and in need of a breath of fresh air in order to improve the welfare of the birds.

Neil contributed birds bred from his aviary, he has kept birds for a number of years and now mainly rescue birds which come to him by word of mouth. Quadron gave a contribution to purchase 6 birds.  The remainder were donated by Mr David Lintern a Shepton resident.

Neil also contacted local businesses and was very pleased with the support;
Shepton Mallet Town Council, Quadron, Tina's Pet Pantry, Tweenways Bird & Animal Farm, Jeff Body, Dobbies Garden Centre, The Works

They collected bird feeding equipment, bird feed, two pond pumps for the water features in the aviary, a 'Shepton sheep' and discount on the paint for the murals. Also there have been various local residents who have helped with the transformation in the form of labour and the park keepers particularly Merv gave a great deal of support along with the Town Council under the guidance of Cllr. Jeff Curtis.

 To complete the project Neil contacted Whitstone School who were very enthusiastic to help paint murals on the back wall. Winning entries were chosen by public votes and kindly displayed by Tesco.  The two winning entries by Sarah Welman and Katrina Butt now form the murals at the rear of the aviary.

The Aviary will be officially opened Sunday 14th August at 11am by Colin Lockey, his last post as a Councillor was the holder of the park portfolio. They expect people connected with the re-modelling and those who have professional involvement in animal welfare. They also welcome you all to the opening.

We are so lucky to have this. Lets bring the same standards and attention to detail to the town, the park was immaculate this morning!
